Three shot in Newark, continuing

Three people were shot in Newark’s North Ward today, continuing a surge of violence that began Sunday, police said.

Two of the victims were hit in the face during the incident, which occurred shortly before 11 a.m., at Bloomfield Avenue and Ridge Street, near Branch Brook School, police said. Authorities have not released their conditions.

Investigators are searching for two suspects, police said.

On Monday night, two men were shot and killed in separate attacks in Newark’s Vailsburg neighborhood.

On Sunday, a man was shot and killed in the city’s South Ward.

It was also a bloody weekend in nearby Irvington, where eight people were shot — one fatally — and three were stabbed between Friday night and Sunday morning.

The spate of violence comes two months after Newark enjoyed 43 days with out a homicide — the longest the city had gone without a killing in four decades.

Opinion: And it isn’t even Summer yet and murders in Newark are on the rise. Even with cameras mounted in residential neighborhoods and known hot spots, murders are on the rise. In my opinion, these murders are being committed in broad daylight, by someone high on drugs who doesn’t remember committing them, or, by someone who is going through gang initiation to replace gang members who were recently incarcerated. Newark, New Jersey and other urban cities are under siege. People living in urban areas fear their own people more so now than ever which is disturbing and sad.
