The Lovely First Daughters

The First Daughters Growing Up Right Before Our Eyes

Twelve-year-old Malia Obama wears braces, toots a flute and is after her father to save the tigers. Younger sister Sasha, who is 9, shoots hoops like her basketball-loving dad and dances hip-hop.
Both girls get up at 6 a.m. to get ready for school.

Barack and Michelle Obama put their girls off-limits to the news media after they moved to the White House, saying they wanted to keep their daughters’ lives as normal as possible. But tidbits about the private doings of the youngest children to live in the White House since the Kennedy family do dribble out. Often they come from a surprising source: Mom and Dad.

It was President Barack Obama who revealed, perhaps to his daughter’s utter embarrassment, that Malia had been fitted with braces. He also spilled her plans to spend most of August at camp.

“She’s my baby,” he said of Malia, straying from his script at a political fundraiser of all places. “Even though she’s 5-(foot)-9 now, she’s still my baby. And she just got braces, which is good, because she looks like a kid and she was getting … she’s starting to look too old for me.”

The prospect of spending even part of the summer without his first born around also had Obama waxing sentimental.

Asked about summer vacation plans, Obama told an interviewer that “a month of it’s going to be taken up with Malia going away for camp, which she’s never done before. And I may shed a tear when she’s on the way out.”

In a separate interview, Obama said his daughters have savings accounts and they get an allowance, though he didn’t say how much they get or how often they get it. He also said the girls are getting old enough where they may be able to start earning money by baby-sitting.

The first lady is also guilty of breaching the privacy wall she and her husband put up around the girls.

“Malia’s one issue for her father is saving the tigers,” Mrs. Obama told an audience of young children visiting the White House. “So we talk about the tigers at least once a week and what he’s doing to save the tigers.” Tigers apparently are Malia’s favorite creature.

Mrs. Obama also has revealed that:

—Both girls play the piano; Malia also plays the flute.

—Sasha likes to dance hip-hop. The girls also are working on their tennis game.

—They are not allowed to watch TV during the week, and weekend viewing is limited.

—The girls can only use the computer during the week if they need to for school assignments.

The White House says the Obamas are just behaving like, well, parents when they talk about Malia and Sasha.

“I think they’re proud of their daughters and, you know, they do not try to go out of their way. There’s no strategic decision to talk about them,” press secretary Robert Gibbs said in an interview. “I think a lot of it comes from … pride.”

How Many Calories Are In A Burger With Fries?

Calorie-count guidelines drafted for menus, vending machines

By Andrew Zajac
Tribune Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON — Consumers will know the number of calories in food from many chain restaurants and vending machines under draft guidelines released today by the Food and Drug Administration.

The menu labeling guidelines require that calorie information be posted in the same size type as the menu item or price, whichever is larger, according to the guidelines, which were authorized by the landmark health care legislation passed earlier this year. Vending machines must include the information in a “clear and conspicuous” manner so consumers can review it before making a purchase, the guidelines say.

The calorie count listed also must be accurate within 10 calories.

The push for including calorie disclosure in the health care bill comes from some disturbing statistics: About two-thirds of American adults are overweight or obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Americans consume about one-third of their calories on food prepared outside the home and tend to guess wrong about the number of calories in such foods.

The calorie disclosure requirement applies only to restaurants and other food-selling chains with 20 or more locations and vending machine operators with 20 or more machines.

Smaller businesses can voluntarily opt in to the labeling program.

The proposed guidelines are preliminary and could change as a result of information received during a 45-day public comment period. The FDA won’t begin enforcing the labeling requirement until the rules are finalized some time after the comment period.

Calorie counts would be displayed in five-unit increments for a food item containing 50 or fewer calories and in 10-unit increments for products over that mark.

Menus or menu boards also must include the statement that, “Additional nutrition information is available on request” and restaurants must make available more detailed data about the source of calories, calories derived from fat and the amount of saturated fat, sodium, sugars and other key food components in each menu item.

Daily specials, custom orders and items appearing on a menu for less than 60 days would be exempt from calorie disclosure.

Similar calorie displays already are on menus by law in New York City.

The guidelines would pre-empt any similar local or state measures unless they are identical to the federal standard.

A spokeswoman for the National Restaurant Association said the group is pleased by the pre-emption because it gives restaurateurs a predictable rule. She declined further comment pending study of the guidelines.

Michael Hanlon, senior scientist for Consumers Union, lauded the labeling requirement as a useful tool in guiding food choices but warned that it’s not a magic bullet in curbing a national tendency toward excessive weight gain.

Paris Hilton Arrested for Cocaine Possession
By Hollie McKay

Paris Hilton was arrested late Friday for possession of cocaine, a Las Vegas Police spokesperson confirmed to Pop Tarts.

The hotel heiress was a passenger in a vehicle that was stopped by police after officers smelled what they suspected was marijuana.

“Officers noticed a vehicle leaving smoke trail of a contolled substance (and) made a stop based on that,” Las Vegas police spokesman Marcus Martin told The Associated Press.

The driver was arrested for drug possession and through further interaction between Hilton and authorities, it was discovered she was in possession of cocaine, police say.

Hilton was detained at the Clark County Detention Center and released at around 2:30 a.m. PT Saturday.

Her representative was not immediately available for comment. Her publicist, Dawn Miller, did not immediately return an e-mail message from the AP.

Police didn’t immediately released the name of the man who was driving the car. Martin said he’s not sure if he was also arrested.

The socialite is no stranger to troubles with the law. She was arrested this summer after the Brazil-Netherlands World Cup match in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, on suspicion of possession of marijuana. The case was then dropped at a midnight court hearing.

Hilton pleaded no contest in 2007 to alcohol-related reckless driving and was sentenced to 45 days in jail. After spending about 23 days in jail, Hilton told U.S. television host Larry King that the experience caused her to re-evaluate the role partying played in her life. She said she wanted “to help raise money for kids and for breast cancer and multiple sclerosis.”

56 Pound Tumor Removed From Woman

A member of the surgery team of the Gandulfo hospital in Lomas de Zamora, Buenos Aires province, shows the 56-pound tumor removed from a patient’s womb.Doctors look for small tumor, find 56-pounder

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Doctors were shocked when they looked into a woman’s uterus searching for an orange-size tumor but found something that resembled a giant rock instead.

Surgeons ended up removing a 56-pound tumor from the 54-year-old woman. It was 19 inches across.

“At first sight, one could see it was going to be a big tumor, but not that big,” said Dr. Oscar Lopez, leader of the surgical team that operated on the woman at Gandulfo Hospital in the city of Lomas de Zamora.

“We were totally shocked,” Lopez added Thursday in discussing the procedure that was conducted earlier this year.

Stunning perhaps, but not the biggest. News stories and medical reports say that was a 303-pound (137.6-kilogram) ovarian cys100 pounds (45.5 kilograms) have been reported.

A biopsy determined the growth removed at Gandulfo Hospital was a sarcoma, a malignant tumor, and the patient is being monitored by doctors after spending five days in the hospital following the surgery.

The woman, a housewife, who prefers to remain anonymous, weighed 343 pounds (140 kilograms) at the time of the surgery, which lasted four hours and involved eight surgeons — about double the time and staff usually needed.

Lopez said the woman had felt a constant growth in her abdomen for a year and a half, but just thought she was gaining weight.

Finally, she consulted doctors and it was determined she needed surgery, and the tumor was removed a couple of months ago, he said.

Lopez said that before removing tumors, surgeons generally puncture a growth in various places to remove liquid, but in this case the tumor remained solid.

“We thought the tumor could be reduced to an orange’s size, but it was totally solid,” he said.

Wesley Snipes Wants A New Trial

Movie star Wesley Snipes does not have to report to prison — yet. The U.S. District Court judge who sentenced the “Blade” star to 36 months in prison in 2008 for tax-related crimes overruled a U.S. marshal who had sent the actor a letter directing him to report to the Bureau of Prisons no later than noon Sept. 2.

Wesley Snipes — I Want a New Trial!!!

Wesley Snipes isn’t going to prison for tax evasion without a fight — because TMZ has learned the actor believes he wasn’t given a fair trial … and now he’s filed documents requesting a brand new one.

According to documents filed today in Florida federal court, Snipes — who was sentenced forever ago to serve 3 years in prison — claims there was “jury misconduct” during his trial … and he’s got the emails to prove it.

In the docs, Snipes claims his defense team received emails after the trial was over from two jurors, who claimed three of the other jurors “told us [Snipes] was guilty before they even heard the first piece of evidence.”

Snipes claims that alone warrants a new trial … but there’s more.

In the docs, Snipes says the government failed to disclose that the key witness against him — his former accountant Kenneth Starr (not that one) — was actually under investigation for engaging in “criminal activities of conspiring to evade income taxes” with another client.

Snipes’ attorney argues that if the jury knew Starr was being investigated …

Timbaland Refutes Suicide Report: “Why Would I Commit Suicide?”

By, Marianne Garvey

Yesterday, Timbaland was the focus of a Malibu manhunt amid concerns he might be suicidal. Today, the überproducer is talking about the whole mix-up.

“It ain’t nothin to worry about,” he said during an interview this morning with Ryan Seacrest.

According to family members, the 39-year-old hip-hop superstar disappeared following the theft of a $2 million Jacob & Co. watch from his home.

His wife and mother-in-law called in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said he had left his Malibu home “upset, under a lot of stress” and they feared a “possible suicide attempt.” An APB was issued before 5 p.m., and a helicopter and squad cars were mobilized.

Sheriff’s deputies soon found him driving near the Pacific Coast Highway.

But Timbaland says everyone way overreacted. The beatmaster himself called in to Ryan’s radio show this morning to clear up any suicide rumors, saying that the whole incident was blown out of proportion, and that this isn’t the first time people have stolen from him.

“I don’t know what happened to be honest with you, I don’t know what people are talking about,” he said. “People steal from me all the time. Stuff did happen, it wasn’t a watch it was something else.”

What he was upset about was that the item had been in his house and he knew someone he trusted had taken it. He then took a drive to clear his head.

“It’s people that are close to you, you know,” he explained. “So only thing I did was take a drive to see how my head is.”

When he didn’t respond to frantic calls from friends, they assumed the worst.

“They probably thought because I won’t talk to them, I guess people got worried. If my mom ain’t callin’ or my brother or my best friend, ain’t nothing to worry about. The officer pulled me over, he just had to do procedures. I snapped, ‘Who the heck reported something like that? No, why would I commit suicide?’ ”

Timbaland was calling from the studio, where he is currently putting the final touches on Keri Hilson’s new album.

“I’m in the studio,” he said. “I don’t know if a person committing suicide would be in the studio.”
